Volunteer House

Volunteer House – A support centre for children and the community

The Volunteer House is our largest project, which we created from scratch for the people of Buiba Mandinka village in The Gambia. Thanks to the long-term commitment of donors and the work of volunteers, a place has been created that has become the heart of the local community – a space for education, meetings and development.

How was the Volunteer House built?

The construction of the Volunteer House was a huge challenge that required not only financial resources, but also many hours of work on site. From purchasing building materials, to reinforcing the roof and making it termite-proof, to painting the walls and finishing the interiors – every step required precision and commitment.

Thanks to your support:

  • The whole thing was ceremonially handed over to the Buiba Mandinka village community in a ceremony attended by local residents, volunteers and donors.
  • We built a spacious common room, which is the only public building in the village with access to electricity.
  • We equipped the place with books and educational games that children can freely borrow and use.
  • We painted the building, installed educational boards and protective nets on the doors to keep out insects.

Why is the Volunteer House so important?

The Volunteer House serves many functions:

  • A place of education – children can use books, colouring books and educational games, learning in a friendly and safe environment.
  • Meeting space – the building has become a hub for community life, hosting workshops, children’s activities and residents’ meetings.
  • Support for children and young people – educational boards and posters in the building teach basic road safety and how to treat animals, improving the quality of life throughout the village.

Our contribution to village life

The Volunteer House not only supports education and development, but also enhances the safety and comfort of the residents. Equipping the building with signs, wooden reinforcements and insect-proofing is proof of the importance of taking care of every detail so that the place can serve for many years to come.

The Volunteer House is currently looked after by one of the residents – a trusted community activist and councillor for Thirteen Villages – who ensures that the space is used for its intended purpose.

Thank you for your support!

This project would not have been possible without the commitment of many people – donors, volunteers and Buiba Mandinka villagers. Together we have created a place that has become a symbol of hope and development in The Gambia.
