The Animals Action

Access to basic healthcare in the Gambia is difficult even for humans. That is why the fate of animals can be particularly hard. In response to these needs, our Foundation runs Action Animals, which aims to provide animals with better health and living conditions.

How do we operate?

Our assistance to animals covers several key areas:

  • Anti-rabies vaccinations – we organise annual vaccination campaigns, which are key to protecting both animals and people. Rabies is a deadly disease that is still a serious threat in The Gambia. Through regular vaccination, we reduce its spread and save the lives of pets and their carers.
  • Treatment of dogs and other animals – In collaboration with local vets, we provide assistance to animals in need. We treat all diseases, injuries and infections resulting from neglect. We treat each case (including farm animals) on an individual basis, trying to provide the best possible care.
  • Homelessness prevention – although animal homelessness remains a major problem in The Gambia, our primary focus is on preventative health care. However, we also support sterilisations and castrations to help control the population of stray dogs and reduce their suffering.

Collections and donations

As part of the campaign, we hold year-round collections of items to help care for animals. The most needed items are:

  • Collars and leashes – preferably with reflective elements to improve pet safety on the road.
  • Flea and tick repellents – to help protect dogs and cats from parasites.
  • Disinfectant sprays and hygiene products – useful for treating wounds and infections.
  • Broad-spectrum medicines – antibiotics, painkillers and antiparasitics to help treat animals in need more effectively.
  • Bowls, blankets and other accessories – which can improve the daily living conditions of pets.

Thanks to your donations, we have been able to equip local vets with basic supplies to treat animals and carry out vaccination campaigns in various villages.

How can you help?

Anyone can get involved with The Animals Action by donating or financially supporting our work. You can also volunteer with The Suitcase Operation to transport essential items to The Gambia.

Why is it worth it?

Helping animals is not only about caring for their health and lives, but also a way to improve the safety and quality of life for the whole community. Healthy and well-maintained animals mean less risk of zoonotic diseases and more harmony in the relationship between people and pets.

With your support, we can continue to make a real difference to the lives of animals in The Gambia. Join us and make sure that help reaches where it is needed most.
