Dental visit – Help that makes you smile
The state of oral health in The Gambia leaves a lot to be desired, especially among children, who often do not have access to basic dental care. Our Dental Visit is a campaign that not only offers specific dental treatments, but also educates about how to take care of oral hygiene.
How did the action proceed?
During the visit to The Gambia, our volunteers, Dr Natalia Podsiadło (dentist) and her husband Mateusz, conducted a workshop at the Volunteer House, teaching children the basics of oral hygiene. With practical tips and demonstrations, the young participants learned how to brush their teeth properly and why regular hygiene is so important.
But that is not all! The campaign gained greater reach when Natalia and Mateusz received more than 100 patients at a clinic on the coast in just three days. The majority of people needed help in the form of extractions of deciduous and permanent teeth – procedures that, for many, were their only salvation from pain and infection.
Post-treatment education and support
After each treatment, patients received toothpaste and toothbrush kits, as well as detailed instructions on how to take care of their dental health in the future. Education was a key part of the campaign – we showed that proper hygiene can prevent many health problems.
Who makes this possible?
This unique campaign was made possible thanks to the commitment of many people and institutions:
- Dr Natalia Podsiadlo and her husband Mateusz – a dentist and assistant, who dedicated their time, energy and holidays to help those most in need.
- Polish dental clinics – supporting the campaign by donating tools, medicines and dental supplies. Special thanks to VitaDent Sosnowiec, NL Clinic Katowice and Kania Stomatologia.
- Mission Gambia – an organisation that helped coordinate the paperwork for the campaign.
Why is this important?
Lack of access to dental care is a real problem in The Gambia. Many children and adults suffer from pain, infections or periodontal disease that could easily be prevented with regular hygiene and basic treatments. Our campaign showed that even a few days of intensive work can make a huge difference to many people’s lives.
How can you help?
You can support our future work by donating funds or dental supplies such as toothpaste, toothbrushes or dental tools. Every form of support makes a difference and helps us reach those who need it most.
