Aids for schools

In The Gambia, many schools face a lack of funding for basic needs – both in terms of teacher salaries and educational materials for children. We support facilities that are not funded by the government and operate through the determination of local communities. Our aim is to help create a better learning environment and support the schools that need it most.

Roots Nursery School – an example of our collaboration

One of the facilities we have partnered with is Roots Nursery School, a primary school on the coast of The Gambia. This school was established for children whose parents cannot afford to provide them with an education. Unfortunately, the lack of government funding means that the school depends solely on outside help to function.

During our recent visit to The Gambia, the school’s director, who is also the Alkalo of the village, approached us for support. Roots Nursery School is struggling to afford educational materials and salaries for teachers and school staff.

What is the situation like?

The staff at Roots Nursery School, despite their commitment and dedication to the children, receive token salaries that are barely enough for their basic needs. Here is the monthly cost of living for the school staff:

Headmaster – 2 500 dalasi,
Teachers (three persons) – 2 000 dalasi each,
Cleaning person – 1 500 dalasi.
These amounts clearly show how much financial support is needed for the school to continue operating and providing education to the children.

How do we support Roots Nursery School?

So far the school has received support from us in the form of:

  • Educational materials – notebooks, books in English, educational games and other school supplies;
  • Financial support – enabling us to pay the salaries of teachers and school staff,
  • School equipment – donating tools to support children’s learning and development.

Every form of support makes a real difference to the day-to-day running of the school and supports the education of children from the poorest families.

How can you help?

If you would like to support our work for Gambian schools, you can:

  • donate educational materials such as notebooks, books, crayons or backpacks,
  • make a donation that will be used to support teachers and purchase necessary teaching aids.
